Calumet Farm 12 Year Single Rack Black Bourbon (Discontinued)

On the palate, there are abundant notes of vanilla, banana, and caramel. Honestly, not much else stands out, but that's acceptable. Calumet is clearly aiming for a bananas foster, creme brulee profile, and that's not an issue. There are no flaws or off-putting tastes either. Regarding the finish, at 12 years and 47% ABV, it has a noticeable tannin bite, though not quite on the level of Weller or Van Winkle. It sort of sits between simple enjoyment and deeply complex flavors for enthusiasts (similar to McKenna BiB in this respect). I can't help but wish the proof were a bit higher. It's not quite divine, but it aims to be, and that extra strength likely would have elevated it.

I found the Calumet Farm 12 Year Black to have an earthy & grassy aroma, with faint hints of herbal and vanilla notes. There was also an acidic hint of acetone on the nose. The acidity and alcohol are much more pronounced on the taste, as these sensations surge to the roof and back of my mouth. Unfortunately, the finish is short and leaves me feeling somewhat "hollow" in recalling what I tasted. In summary, an adequate "drinker," but not at its price point. To put it briefly, too ordinary to warrant the cost, in my honest opinion.

This bourbon tries to be more complex, but it falls short. The flavors don't quite come together, which is a shame when sipping it straight. However, it makes for some of the most exceptional Old Fashioned cocktails I've ever created. The smoky, unbalanced taste, and moderate oak notes find their perfect match with the sugar and bitters in the mixed drink. I'd buy this again, but only with the intention of making some seriously pricey cocktails!

Sweet, oaky, with a light char. It has a thin texture. Smooth with minimal burn. The finish is short to medium-low. I like it, but I'd prefer a longer finish. I don't dislike it either. It might be suitable for a daily drink... but it's quite unremarkable. However, for a twelve-year-old, I anticipated a richer flavor. It's bland and one-dimensional. Update: After three servings, I poured the rest down the drain. It was a waste of money.

The nose is mild but pleasant, with notes of butterscotch. The taste is nice and balanced; nothing dominates, it's just mellow and excellent. Well-rounded flavors of honey, sweet corn, mint, creme brûlée, and toffee. The finish is very agreeable, not excessively long, with a touch of corn sweetness.

Nose is quite gentle, offering banana cream, dark cherries, and almond with a honeyed quality. The palate follows suit, being mild and emphasizing almond and raw hazelnut. Vanilla and woody tannins build during the finish. A really pleasing whiskey, though it comes at a cost.
