Tricia Thomason 3.8

Aroma: Sweet sherry-infused raisins, stewed tropical fruits, oak wood. There's an alcohol sting on the neat aroma, unexpected for a whisky of this age and strength. Water alters the aroma's character but doesn't detract from it; in fact, it makes the aroma resemble an older whisky. Palate: Sweet malt and fortified wine on arrival. A touch of hot spice (ginger, chili) which intensifies as it develops. Good oily texture. Water softens the spicy notes, improving their texture and integration, resulting in a moderate cinnamon-ginger flavor. Dilution also enhances the malty cereal characteristics. Finish: Medium. Sweet and spicy malt. With water, honey and treacle are present in the aftertaste. While a bit one-dimensional, I immediately enjoyed the aroma. It strongly possesses that classic sherry-finished Bunnahabhain character, and smelling it reminded me of walking through Warehouse 9 at the distillery. The palate is good but didn't impress me as much initially, and I was eager to add water, certain it would perform wonders. It did help, and I'd definitely recommend diluting this dram, but miracles... meh, perhaps not. Tasted from a sample purchased at Bunnahabhain Distillery, April 16, 2025 "Good": 84/100 (3.75 stars)
