About this bottle

Buffalo Trace Experimental Collection 12 Year Wheated Bourbon, Cut At Four Years, marked the brand's initial 2020 Experimental Whiskey release. A wheated bourbon recipe was barreled in December 2007 at 114 proof and aged for four years. It was then removed, diluted to 100 proof with water, and returned to barrels for an additional 8 years. Bottling occurred in March 2020 at 90 proof. Available in 375ml bottles in limited quantities starting May 2020.

Skyla Ness 4.5

The aroma is soft and subtle, with notes of caramel and vanilla. It definitely smells sweet, but not overwhelmingly so; it's delicate and pleasant. The palate is similar but intensified, with vanilla and caramel giving way to butterscotch. Oak is present, though not as pronounced as in many 12-year-old, 90-proof bourbons. Perhaps the four-year maturation is influencing this. The finish is familiar, definitely in the Weller style. It's a medium-long finish that fades gracefully. Overall, it resembles a Weller 12, perhaps a gentler version. It's definitely an enjoyable bourbon; I recommend it if you can find it.
