Blair Athol 11 year Hand-Filled Distillery Exclusive Batch 2023/006

Nose: Faint peppermint followed by red berries, cooked plums, rose water, pineapple, malt extract, vanilla, orange liqueur, and a touch of weak black tea. Adding water enhances the fruit aromas. Palate: A substantial and impressive arrival. Sweet, rich, creamy, and full-bodied, yet it feels smooth, soft, and comforting rather than dark or heavy. Cereal, malt, and light red fruits are prominent and very satisfying with an excellent texture. Finish: Medium to long with cereal and lingering sweet red berries. This is an outstanding cask selection from the distillery's visitor center, changed periodically. This particular cask, opened in 2023, is truly exceptional. It's rich, sweet, fruity, and opulent, reminiscent of liquid Turkish delight. While that might sound unusual and not typically to my preference, this is genuinely one of the finest red wine cask maturations I've experienced. Its nose and palate evoke a dessert wine, but the texture and character are more akin to a lightly bourbon-matured whisky with a cereal focus. It resembles a wine-finished Arran more than a standard Blair Athol, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. It's a masterful balance, and it's remarkable how well it works. There's no need to dilute this spirit; the 55.9% ABV is so well integrated that its strength is unnoticeable. A sample was given during the distillery tour, and I later purchased another serving at the bar for detailed analysis. "Excellent": 88/100 (4.5 stars)
