Update. I have no idea why I have another sample of this, as the last one was decidedly average, and I rated it a 3, unable to discern much. Perhaps the initial tasting was a quick sample at a whiskey event. This is a recalibration tasting to assess the accuracy of quick event tastings. Well, it's pretty accurate... I gave this a 3, which I found surprising for a 21-year-old Benriach, but now that I'm drinking it at leisure, I don't think that assessment was too far off. I don't understand how some aged Benriachs are exceptional while others are quite average. The nose offers literally nothing, not even a strong alcohol scent. More is happening on the palate, with sweet vanilla and hints of port. Maybe it's closer to a 3.25 to 3.5 rating, but if you consider value for money, it would be a 2.
