Basil Hayden Subtle Smoke (2024 Release)

Intro: I've found Basil Hayden's to be just okay previously; nothing outstanding. However, the idea of their usual sweetness mixed with a bit of smoke intrigued me. The price wasn't too high, so I took a chance. Nose: The initial smell is a bit peculiar. Peanut brittle and salted caramel come first, followed by a smokiness that isn't peaty, more like hickory or a campfire. There's even a faint floral note with the smoke, which seems a bit unusual. Overall, it smells sweet, nutty, and mildly smoky. Taste: The flavor begins gently, mirroring the nose with light peanut brittle sweetness and some milk chocolate. It's delicate, as expected for 80 proof, making complexity hard to find. Mid-palate, it dries out with mild baking spices. The chocolate becomes darker and slightly chalky towards the end as the dryness sets in. Finish: Most of the advertised "subtle smoke" shows up here – it's more campfire than barbecue, with some tannic charred oak and a hint of butterscotch before fading. The finish is short to medium, not very sweet, and leaves a mild warmth. A higher proof might have given it more depth. Conclusion: Basil Hayden Subtle Smoke is not unpleasant or overly intense in any particular way, but this restraint limits its complexity and body. More alcohol could have added character to this easy-drinking, average sipper. It's suitable for casual sipping while socializing, not for deep contemplation. At about $50, there are many bourbons that offer more flavor and substance.

I'm not typically a fan of high rye content, but I didn't notice it much here. I was doubtful when I received this as a present, but I ended up really liking it. It has a slight spiciness, but it's not overwhelming.
