Barrell Bourbon Batch 016

The aroma has a pronounced woody character, yet it's not overpowering. Clove is abundant, along with cinnamon and brown sugar. It lacks a strong sweet scent but smells rich. It carries a dry, rye-like aroma without much mineral presence. The palate is rich but not overly viscous or exceptionally smooth. It's quite fiery with a prolonged, slow burn. It's rather dry with pleasant barrel notes emerging—plenty of clove and cinnamon, though not excessively drying. Brown sugar is present but tastes lighter than anticipated. It would benefit from being less dry and more robust. It doesn't taste over-oaked, and some subtle red fruit eventually appears, but there's less complexity than I truly hoped for. The dryness prevents an overly mineral taste, as if the rye is dominating, largely due to a satisfying, rich vanilla note from extended aging. This isn't an outstanding barrel. A larger sip reveals more delicate woody and spicy nuances that intertwine more harmoniously and bring in the vanilla. I can even appreciate the balance with the minerality here, but I'd prefer Booker's. I suspect a significant issue is this expression's disappointingly low barrel proof. It definitely has a numbing effect—the clove comes through.

Consumed neat. The nose is subtle, with notes of corn, caramel, a hint of something floral, and perhaps raisins or dark cherries. Medium-bodied. The initial taste is cinnamon and sugar on the tongue. The rye spice hits the back of the throat, giving way to sweet cereal and dark chocolate. A hint of mint appears at the end and on the breath. It became more appealing with each sip. Enjoyable, but not a special occasion pour.

Consumed neat. Notes of butterscotch, floral, and a slight cinnamon spice. Exceptionally smooth at 52% ABV, with minimal to no burn. This was an expensive bottle, but the taste and smoothness justify the cost. I still believe there are bourbons in the $40-50 range comparable to this one, but this particular offering feels a bit more complete.

This definitely improved once some ice melted. Initially, the oak and cinnamon were too dominant, leading to a long, warming finish. After melting, more sweetness emerged. A good bourbon, though I'm still questioning the price point for Barrell bourbon.
