Balmenach Distillery officially commenced operations in 1824, making it nearly two centuries old. In fact, it operated as an illicit distillery even earlier, so it has likely already celebrated its 200th anniversary. Apparently, it's seldom found in single malt form as it's highly sought after for blending. It possesses the old worm tub character, which I appreciate, although at first, I thought it was harsh... after a while, that distinctiveness evolved into 'character.' However, too much of anything can be overwhelming. It's somewhat like Ledaig and Mortlach had offspring, and this is the result. I do like it, though. It's definitely a 3.75, which might even be a 4 if I had a full bottle.
