Arran is a distillery I truly appreciate; their spirits are consistently delightful, full of flavor, and evoke tropical sensations. While their recent branding isn't impressive, their pre-2019 releases featured stunning bottles. This exceptional bottle from the 'The Smuggler Series,' specifically 'The Exciseman' (number III), is a prime example. Excisemen were crucial figures in whisky's past, tasked with collecting duties and uncovering illicit stills in remote areas. Smugglers cleverly evaded them, sometimes hiding spirits in hollowed-out books – much like this Arran gem, presented in a box designed as a fake whisky tome. It's a remarkable presentation. But did the whisky live up to it? Bottled at 56.8% ABV with a golden hue, it was aged in ex-bourbon and Madeira casks. The aroma was outstanding: red fruits, cherries, eggnog, banana, a tropical tanning lotion scent, and rum raisin ice cream. Also present were dried bananas, coconut, pecans, dulce de leche, and caramel ice cream. Simply superb. On the palate, it ranks among the most delicious drinks I sampled in 2021, and I encountered many excellent ones. Flavors included dulce de leche, a hint of sulfur, toasted marshmallows (like s'mores), and a swiss roll (known as 'Brazo Gitano' in Spanish; look it up), along with banana bread. The finish provided a perfect conclusion to one of my favorite drams of the year, featuring dulce de leche, spicy red hot cinnamon candies, and black pepper. It's an intense, yet thoroughly pleasant, experience. In summary, this is a beautifully designed bottle containing absolutely incredible liquid. Everyone at the tasting event I hosted was thoroughly impressed, even the most discerning guests. A magnificent single malt that warrants nothing less than a perfect score. 100/100. Cheers!
