Arran Drumadoon Point

Continuing my Arran journey, I'm sampling The Arran Malt 23 Year Explorer Series Volume 4: Drumadoon Point. It spent 23 years in Sherry Puncheons and was bottled at 49.5%. The nose opens with mango, fried plantains, and sandalwood, then cocoa-dusted prunes and toasted walnuts. Next comes lychee, apricot, and dried pineapple, transitioning to light baking spices, leather, and polished oak, with a moderate alcohol burn. The palate offers a medium texture, starting with mango, pineapple, and sandalwood. A mild spicy bitterness then slowly fades into cocoa-dusted prunes and toasted walnuts. This is followed by caramelized pears, apricot, and tangerine orange, leading to light baking spices, leather, and mildly bitter black tea, with a moderate alcohol burn. The finish is medium in length, featuring mango, dried pineapple, chocolate-covered raisins, toasted coconut, black pepper, and mildly bitter black tea. For 23 years of aging, the sherry influence is surprisingly subtle. Instead of dominating, it complements the sweet tropical fruit profile. The sherry notes add complexity, and the wood influence is quite light with mild bitter oak, making it drink younger than its age. I had high hopes this would surpass the 15-year Argonne release, but the flavors lack the boldness and richness I anticipated, and there's a slight, unbalanced bitterness. It's still a delightful drink, and any Arran enthusiast should try it if they can find a sample or a pour at a reasonable cost.

It's a good sherry-matured expression, with a fairly typical sherried nose and good fruit notes; nothing is really disagreeable, but it just seems rather generic. There's nothing about it that makes it truly stand out. It has a pleasant aroma, a nice balance on the palate, but otherwise feels like any other unpeated, sherry-finished expression available. Would I drink it if offered? - Yes Would I specifically order it? - No Would I buy a bottle? - No NOTE - All reviews are conducted without considering the price.
