Ardbeg Kildalton 1981

Imagine experiencing an aged Ardbeg, yet one so scarce that a full bottle was never produced for this particular expression. This is the situation with Ardbeg's Kildalton 1981, a single malt that was only available as a miniature. It's important to note that Ardbeg was initially closed in that specific year and reopened in 1989. While Ardbeg did launch a 1980 Kildalton full bottle, this 1981, a distinct bottling, was exclusively sold in 5cl miniatures. To add to the intrigue, this bottling occurred in 2005, making it a 24-year-old spirit. It was featured in a limited miniature collection set titled "The Story of Peat." Bottled at 52.6% ABV, I certainly sampled it. The aroma begins with a mossy, swampy character. Suddenly, an extraordinary coffee bean and dark chocolate scent emerges. Yes, emphasized with capital letters. Immense chocolate; remarkably salty, evoking Ecuadorian dark chocolate, the most precise aromatic descriptor possible. Vanilla frosting as a topping. The taste is exceptional. Herbal, mossy, swampy, intensely spicy black pepper, gunpowder, and grapefruit. Very robust with significant character. It's a swamp creature. Incredibly potent! Boundless strength!!! (Capital letters again), Meringue. The aftertaste is flawless in every aspect. Smoky, salty, bonfire embers, gunpowder. Astonishing. A secondary aftertaste appears 30 seconds later, filled with salt and ash. Remarkable, exceptionally long-lasting. In summary, this is a truly overlooked treasure. It can be found at miniature auctions; I've encountered it numerous times but it never captured my interest. After trying the Ardbeg Kildalton 2014, I decided to acquire it, and upon tasting it, I discovered its fascinating history. An absolutely superb dram on the nose, palate, aftertaste, and in its balance, complemented by a great narrative, my evaluation is 98 out of 100, and I question the deduction of two points.
