History

This equal-parts cocktail, inspired by a straight six combustion engine, performs best with high-octane straight rye whiskey.

Powerful six-cylinder automobiles, such as the McLaughlin K-6-45 Extra Special Master Six, were favored by rumrunners during the Prohibition era and became known as "Whiskey Sixes." Their light construction and speed made them well-suited for smuggling alcohol from Canadian whisky distilleries across the frozen Detroit River, which is barely half a mile wide, and other borders.
