History

A Sweet Manhattan with a subtle walnut hint.

The Manhattan cocktail is said to have been created in the 1870s at the Manhattan Club in New York City. The club's proprietor, Joe Sheedy, is often credited with its invention, though no definitive proof exists. The story goes that the drink was commissioned by Samuel Jones, a political figure, for a banquet held in honor of presidential candidate Samuel J. Tilden. The banquet took place at the Manhattan Club, and the drink was named after it. It quickly gained popularity and spread from the club throughout the city and beyond. Early recipes varied, but the core ingredients remained consistent: whiskey, vermouth, and bitters.
