History

Caraway from the kummel subtly flavours this Blood & Sand variation.

This drink is adapted from a recipe found in the "Cocktails Round Town" appendix of Harry McElhone and Wynn Holcomb's 1927 Barflies and Cocktails. Its modern revival owes much to its inclusion in Ted "Dr Cocktail" Haigh's 2009 book Vintage Spirits & Forgotten Cocktails. The anagrammatic name "Bill Henly" was devised for a "Vowel Cocktail" consisting of: Angostura bitters, a dash; Eckau kummel, 1/6; Italian vermouth, 1/3; Orange juice, 1/6; Usher's whiskey, 1/3.
