History

Vodka's strength and cleanliness, softened and flavoured with cassis berry and parfait amour's floral notes.

"The Thunderer" is a moniker for The Times newspaper, and this cocktail originated in 1982. It was conceived for the publication by Dick Bradsell, a renowned London mixologist then employed at Zanzibar, a local bar. In his book, Dicktails, Bradsell states, "This is the first drink I ever invented." Jane MacQuitty, a columnist for The Times Saturday edition, had enlisted Bradsell and other prominent London bartenders to devise a cocktail for the newspaper, and Bradsell's creation was selected as the finest. Recognizing that cocktails encourage creative exploration, The Times Saturday edition tasked Dick Bradsell of Zanzibar with crafting an original beverage fitting for The Times and its readership. A committee of seasoned drinkers evaluated multiple striking mixtures, ultimately casting a unanimous ballot for one that, while not adhering to the trendy fruit-and-parasol style, possessed the potential to become a classic. This drink, appealing from its visual aspect to its potent effect, was deemed ideal for sipping while transitioning from the editorial page to the Court Circular. The selection of a name presented no challenge. The Thunderer 2 measures Stolichnaya vodka 1 teaspoon Creme de Cassis ½ teaspoon Parfait Amour It is essential that the components are chilled to the point of being ice-cold. Store them in a small, frosted cocktail glass (approximately 4oz) within the refrigerator until the opportune moment to coat the interior of the glass with Crème de Cassis. Introduce the Parfait Amour and then fill with the chilled vodka (in a pinch, any Russian or Polish vodka, or Smirnoff Silver, would be acceptable). Present immediately, prior to the glass warming. The inclusion of Parfait Amour can be omitted if its fragrance is considered excessively bold.
