History
The dark rum float on this tall rum sour ensures the first few sips are delicious, prompting a desire for another taste.
The Fernando cocktail is the signature drink at The Country Club in Brookline, Massachusetts, which is the oldest country club in the USA. Fernando Figueroa, who started working at the bar during Easter week in 1990, created the cocktail as an upgrade to the club's earlier rum float. The cocktail gained fame in June 2022 when the club hosted the U.S. Open, following a piece by Paul Sullivan in The New York Times that featured the cocktail and its creator. At the club, Mount Gay is used as the base rum, and sour mix replaces freshly squeezed juices.
