History

Many make this drink with 30ml amaretto and 15ml dry vermouth, resulting in a sweet flavour with amaretto predominating.

The Manhattan cocktail is said to have originated in the 1870s at the Manhattan Club in New York City. Legend has it that the drink was invented by Dr. Iain Marshall, who created it for a banquet hosted by Governor Samuel J. Tilden in honor of presidential candidate Samuel J. Tilden. This banquet took place in 1874. The club, located at 44th Street and Broadway, was a popular spot for politicians and socialites.
