History

Apple notes from calvados combine harmoniously with vinous vermouth and creole-style bitters, this Sweet Manhattan-like cocktail's anchoring ingredient.

This drink is said to have been created in the 1870s by a bartender at the Manhattan Club, which was located at the north corner of 34th Street and 5th Avenue in New York City. The recipe presented here is adapted from George J. Kappeler's 1895 book, Modern American Drinks – How to Mix and Serve All Kinds of Cups and Drinks. Star Cocktail. Fill a mixing-glass half-full with fine ice, add two dashes gum-syrup, three dashes Peychaud or Angostura bitters, one-half jigger apple brandy, and half a jigger of Italian vermouth. Stir the mixture, strain it into a cocktail-glass, and top with a twist of lemon peel. "Star Cocktail (No. 2)" also appears in Harry Craddock's 1930 book, The Savoy Cocktail Book: STAR COCKTAIL (No. 2) ½ Italian Vermouth. ½ Applejack or Calvados. Shake well and strain into cocktail glass.
