History
Rich and fruity with balancing brandy; reminiscent of a fruity vintage port.
Two distinct vintage cocktails share similar names, one of which is Sloppy Joe. Both originated at or are named after Sloppy Joe's, a well-known bar in Havana, Cuba, during the 1930s. Ernest Hemingway frequented the establishment, and Sloppy Joe's served as the inspiration for the fictional Freddy's Bar in his novel To Have and Have Not. This recipe is adapted from a variation of the other Sloppy Joe cocktail found in Stanley M. Jones' 1977 Jones' Complete Barguide. The SLOPPY JOE'S COCKTAIL is served in a Cocktail Glass and shaken with 1 oz lime juice, ¼ oz grenadine, ¼ orange curacao, ¾ oz rum, and ¾ oz dry vermouth. A variation includes ¾ oz pineapple juice, ¾ oz brandy, ¾ oz port, 1 dash grenadine, and 1 dash orange curacao. Both are to be shaken vigorously with ice cubes and strained into a double old-fashioned glass with ice-con around a straw.
