History
While the serving temperature and the freshness of the orange juice are critical for this cocktail's success, it might be better suited for a Harvey Wallbanger. The preferred method for Screwdrivers involves 75ml of vodka, 90ml orange juice, 7.5ml rich sugar syrup, and 3 dashes of orange bitters, served in a Collins glass. The generous vodka measure contributes a desirable grainy texture. However, to temper its potency, the ingredients have been reduced by a third and served in a smaller Highball glass while maintaining the original ratios.
According to legend, this cocktail emerged in the late 1940s in Iran. American oil engineers working in the desert, seeking refreshment, supposedly mixed orange juice with their vodka, using a screwdriver from their work clothes as a stirrer. This account is partially corroborated by a mention in the 24th October 1949 issue of Time Magazine, which stated: "In the dimly lighted bar of the sleek Park Hotel, Turkish intelligence agents mingle with American engineers and Balkan refugees, drinking the latest Yankee concoction of vodka and orange juice, called a 'screwdriver'."
