History

A fruity almond gin sour reminiscent of a Mai Tai, served straight-up for gin lovers.

The Royal Hawaiian cocktail originated in 1948 at the Moana Hotel in Waikiki Beach, Hawaii. Its earliest known printed mention is in Ted Saucier's 1951 book, Bottoms Up. ROYAL HAWAIIAN Courtesy, Moana Hotel, Honolulu 1 jigger gin 1 jigger pineapple juice ⅓ jigger lemon juice 1 teaspoon orgeat syrup Ice Shake well, and serve in a chilled champagne glass. In 1953, the Moana Hotel's bungalows, located across the street, were torn down. Following more than a year of construction, the Princess Kaiulani Hotel opened on the former site, bearing the name of Princess Kaʻiulani. It seems The Royal Hawaiian cocktail was revived as the signature drink of this new hotel, the Princess Kaiulani. Princess Victoria Kawēkiu Kaʻiulani Lunalilo Kalaninuiahilapalapa Cleghorn (1875-1899) was the sole child of Princess Miriam Likelike and the final heir apparent to the Hawaiian throne. She led a determined, though ultimately unsuccessful, campaign to reinstate the Hawaiian monarchy after the royal family's overthrow in 1893. Her life was cut short at the age of 23 due to persistent health problems, and she passed away in Hawaii.
