History

Brandy washed with Fernet, rounded by maple syrup, deepened by bitters.

This Toronto Cocktail deviates from the modern norm by using brandy instead of whiskey. Robert Vermeire's 1922 book Cocktails - How to Mix Them features this cocktail with brandy as the base. The suggestion to use brandy and the drink's name originate from a February 2022 comment by Michael N. on the Toronto cocktail page. The recipe for the Fernet Cocktail is as follows: Fill a bar glass half full with broken ice, add 1 dash of Angostura Bitters, 2 dashes of plain Sugar or Gum Syrup, ¼ gill of Fernet Branca, and ¼ gill of Cognac Brandy, or Rye Whisky to taste. Stir well with a spoon, strain into a cocktail glass, and top with a squeeze of lemon peel. This cocktail is highly regarded by Canadians in Toronto.
