It was first documented in Frederic Lawrence Knowles' 1900 publication, The Cocktail Book: A Sideboard Manual for Gentlemen. The Puritan Cocktail is prepared in a mixing glass. Recipe: THREE dashes orange bitters one spoonful yellow chartreuse two-thirds Plymouth gin one-third French vermouth Fill the mixing glass with ice, stir the ingredients, and strain into a cocktail glass.
