Ingredients

1 3/4 oz Gin
1 oz Red quinquina e.g. Dubonnet, Byrrh
1/4 oz Kirschwasser
1 dash Orange bitters

How to make

Serve in a coupe glass

Prepare

  1. 1 Select and pre-chill a COUPE GLASS.
  2. 2 Prepare garnish of lemon zest twist.

  1. 3 STIR all ingredients with ice.
  2. 4 STRAIN into chilled glass.

Garnish

  1. 5 EXPRESS lemon zest twist over the cocktail and use as garnish.

A Zaza/Dubonnet Cocktail No. 1 enhanced with a splash of kirschwasser.

This cocktail was created in late 2023 or early 2024 by J. E. Clapham of Clapham Cocktails. Clapham states that this drink relates to the Blackthorn No. 4 found in William "Cocktail Bill" Boothby's 1930 book, World Drinks and How To Prepare Them, and the Merry Widow from Albert Stevens Crockett's 1935 book, The Old Waldorf-Astoria Bar Book. BLACKTHORN, NO. 4 Gin . . . . . . . . . . . . . ½ jigger Dubonnet . . . . . . . . ¼ jigger Kirschwasser . . . . . ¼ jigger Stir well with ice, strain into chilled glass and serve.
