History
This White Lady variation uses peach liqueur for a lighter, fruitier taste.
This cocktail was created in 1936 by Sidney Cox, a bartender at the Grosvenor House, London, for the British Empire Cocktail Competition, where it secured 1st Prize. In that same year, King-Emperor Edward VIII's intention to marry Wallis Simpson, an American socialite with two prior divorces, triggered a constitutional crisis within the British Empire. Objections arose from religious, legal, political, and moral standpoints due to Mrs Simpson's previous marriages, and the union was opposed by the governments of the United Kingdom and the autonomous Dominions of the British Commonwealth. Despite this opposition, Edward expressed his deep affection for Mrs Simpson, and his refusal to relinquish her led to his abdication in December 1936. His brother Albert succeeded him, adopting the royal name George VI. Edward, stripped of his royal title due to abdicating the throne, was granted the style His Royal Highness, the Duke of Windsor. He married Mrs Simpson the following year, and they remained married for 35 years until his passing. She was, in his eyes, his 'Perfect Lady'.
