History

A short, sharp, and very satisfying bracer to precede or chase a meal.

This cocktail is first documented in Harry Johnson's 1900 Bartenders' Manual. It also appears in Harry Craddock's 1930 Savoy Cocktail Book, where Bokers bitters is substituted with orange bitters. It should be noted that Harry Johnson's recipe specifies "3 or 4 dashes of bitters (Boker's genuine only)."
