History

A twist on the classic Sweet Manhattan, this version uses añejo tequila as the base spirit. The creator found that tequila pairs better with bianco vermouth and maraschino liqueur than with sweet vermouth and Angostura Bitters, and substituted lavender bitters for the latter, noting a fondness for the combination of tequila and lavender.

The Manhattan cocktail, a legendary concoction, is widely believed to have been invented in the 1870s at the Manhattan Club in New York City. While the exact date and circumstances remain a topic of some debate, the most popular account credits its creation to a bartender named Black, who purportedly mixed it for a party hosted by Jennie Jerome, the mother of Winston Churchill, in honor of presidential candidate Samuel J. Tilden. Another theory suggests the drink originated earlier, possibly in the 1860s, but the Manhattan Club story, dating to around 1874, is the most frequently cited.
