History
A dry vermouth-forward brandy Manhattan for pre- or after-dinner.
This recipe is adapted from O. H. Byron's 1884 publication, The Modern Bartenders' Guide. Notably, it appears in the book following two recipes for the Manhattan, which is considered the first known Manhattan recipe. Metropolitan Cocktail. (A small wine-glass.) ½ pony brandy. 1 " French vermouth. 3 dashes Angostura bitters. 3 " gum syrup.
