History
A Wet Martini served over ice, with added cognac orange liqueur for sweetness and flavour.
Joe Gilmore at The American Bar in London's Savoy Hotel created this drink to commemorate Charles de Gaulle's initial state visit to Britain in April 1960, when he was President of the French Republic. The cocktail's name honors the Cross of Lorraine, a symbol of the Order of Liberation. The initial recipe specified 1½ parts gin, 1 part dry vermouth, and 1 part Grand Marnier.
