History

A refreshing Martini, presented 'perfect' and 'wet'.

This cocktail originates from Harry Craddock's 1930 The Savoy Cocktail Book. The Lone Tree is listed with the following preparation: 'Shake well and strain into cocktail glass.' The recipe calls for 2 Dashes Orange Bitters, ⅓ Italian Vermouth, ⅓ French Vermouth, and ⅓ Dry Gin. R. de Fleury's 1934 book 1700 Cocktails for the Man Behind the Bar also features the Lone Tree, alongside a "Lone Tree No. 2" variation. The "Lone Tree No. 1" in de Fleury's book uses 2 Dashes Orange Bitters, ⅓ Martini Vermouth, ⅓ French Vermouth, and ⅓ Dry Gin, served with a squeeze of Orange Peel. The "Lone Tree No. 2" comprises ⅓ Martini Vermouth and ⅓ Tom Gin, stirred well.
