History

Light rum and soda make a subtly refreshing drink. Do not serve too long or dilution will kill it.

The Mismo was purportedly started by a group of Americans at the Cosmopolitan Club in Santiago in 1899. A Cuban colleague, ordering drinks, requested a Bacardi rum and seltzer (soda). Another Cuban friend asked for 'Lo mismo', meaning 'the same' in Spanish. Unfamiliar with the language but wishing to participate, the Americans also requested 'lo mismos'. The subsequent day, the Americans returned and ordered more 'Mismos' from the same barman. The name endured. "It spread with remarkable rapidity", the New York Tribune observed shortly thereafter. Today, every barkeeper in Santiago understands the request if 'Mismo' is ordered.
