Ingredients

1 1/2 oz Rye whiskey 50% abv
1 oz Rosso/sweet vermouth
1/12 oz Amer Picon
1 dash Orange bitters

How to make

Serve in a nick & nora glass

Prepare

  1. 1 Select and pre-chill a NICK & NORA GLASS.
  2. 2 Prepare garnish of orange zest twist.

  1. 3 STIR all ingredients with ice.
  2. 4 FINE STRAIN into chilled glass.

Garnish

  1. 5 EXPRESS orange zest twist over the cocktail and use as garnish.

The earliest recorded formulation for a Liberal cocktail is found in George Kappeler's Modern American Drinks, published in 1895. Subsequent renditions of the Liberal are featured in Thos. Stuart's 1904 Stuart' s Fancy Drinks And How To Mix Them; Jacques Straub's 1913 Straub's Manual of Mixed Drinks; and Albert Stevens Crockett's 1931 Old Waldorf Bar Days. "Liberal Cocktail. Fill a mixing-glass half-full fine ice, add one dash syrup, half a jigger Amer Picon bitters, half a jigger whiskey. Mix, strain into cocktail glass. A small piece of lemon peel on top. Serve."
