History

In the interest of responsible enjoyment, sip the Kopstoot slowly from each glass, savoring the combination rather than downing the genever.

The traditional Dutch method of consuming genever is known as Kopstoot, which translates to 'headbutt.' Genever is served chilled, directly from a refrigerator or freezer, in a small, tulip-shaped glass filled to the brim. The glass is filled so precisely that any movement would cause a spill. Tradition dictates that the drinker must bend down to take the initial sip of genever without touching the glass.
