History

Unbalanced towards sweetness. Originally served 'neat' but is better over crushed ice.

The Hobson cocktail is named for Richmond Pearson Hobson, a United States Navy Rear Admiral who lived from 1870 to 1937. It is not named after Thomas Hobson, the Cambridge, England man (1545-1631) who originated the phrase 'Hobson's choice'. R.P. Hobson, a hero of the American-Spanish War in 1898, later served as a Congressman. Hobson, a staunch abstainer, has been referred to as 'The Father of American Prohibition' for his efforts to criminalize alcohol and other drugs. He was also a prolific author on the topic.
