History
Bittersweet, invigorating, and refreshing, served at room temperature but chilled is better.
Created in 2009 by Damon Boelte, then beverage director at Prime Meats in Brooklyn, New York City, the Hard Start was inspired by his earlier Waterfront cocktail. This two-ingredient shot emerged during a busy brunch service when the restaurant's general manager, Bill Mann, suffering from a hangover, requested a restorative drink from Damon. Upon tasting it, Bill suggested naming it after the method of starting a motorcycle with a dead battery by rolling downhill, engaging the gear, and releasing the clutch (known in Britain as a 'bump start'). Consequently, Damon named his new shot the Hard Start.
