History
A long-lasting favourite, this is one of the simplest and best mixed drinks ever created. For a Highball serve in a 10oz (295ml) glass with 45ml (1.5oz) gin, 90ml (3oz) tonic water and plenty of ice.
The exact origins of the Gin and Tonic are unclear. Gin, or a similar juniper-based spirit, has been consumed for medicinal purposes since the 1600s. Quinine, an extract from a bitter bark, was used to combat malaria even earlier. The first commercial quinine-based tonics appeared in the 1850s. The widespread use of tonic, particularly in British colonies like India, is evident with Schweppes introducing their carbonated quinine tonic in 1870, naming it Indian Tonic Water. Concurrently, the British in India consumed large amounts of gin. It is widely believed that the Gin and Tonic originated in India during the latter half of the 19th century, partly as a measure against malaria.
