History
A bittersweet, herbal old-school drink ready for rediscovery.
Ian Fenton brought to attention that the cocktail now known as "Froupe" was originally named "Fioupe." This spelling alteration likely resulted from an error during translation, originating from Carlo Beltramo's 1924 book, Carlo's Cocktail et Boissons Américaines, which was written in French. The book states the cocktail was named after "Mr. Fioupe," who "was, before the war, a well-known figure all along the Riviera." Fioupe Cocktail In a tumbler with ice cubes, combine equal parts Italian vermouth and Cognac, along with 1 teaspoon of Bénédictine. Stir thoroughly and strain into a cocktail glass, garnished with lemon zest. Mr. Fioupe was, before the war, a well-known figure all along the Riviera. Harry Craddock's 1930 The Savoy Cocktail Book is largely responsible for this cocktail's recognition. FROUPE COCKTAIL. 1 Teaspoon Bénédictine. ½ Italian Vermouth. ½ Brandy. Stir well and strain into cocktail glass.
