History
Lemon oils dry and add freshness to this Espresso Martini, made special by a splash of olive oil and nutty liqueur. (Sesame oil in garnish presents an allergen warning!)
Mike Rosenthal created this cocktail in Nashville, USA, in August 2023. It achieved joint 2nd place in the Galliano Espresso Martini Competition. The inspiration for this martini came from a trip to Rome with a friend. According to the account, after a large meal with accompanying drinks, a desire to continue the evening led the creator to a neighborhood cafe for a nightcap, while the friend returned to the hotel. Upon entering the cafe, the atmosphere shifted noticeably. It seemed the creator was not accustomed to this local establishment, where patrons were drinking digestifs, limoncello, espresso, and wine. Initially feeling out of place, a conversation began with a couple at the bar, which later extended to include a group of elderly gentlemen. Within an hour, the atmosphere became convivial, with singing and the exchange of social media details, highlighting how memorable evenings can arise from unexpected circumstances. The following morning, the previous night's events were reflected upon over a double espresso, biscotti regina, and two Tylenol. This espresso martini embodies the experience of connecting people in an unfamiliar setting and embracing new possibilities. The bourbon represents the bold American who facilitates introductions, complemented by Italian elements such as amaretto, olive oil, and lemon. The drink is concluded with toasted sesame and espresso. Though seemingly disparate, these flavors harmonize effectively. The name "Free To Rome" serves as a reminder to continue exploring beyond one's comfort zone, as unexpected and memorable experiences await.
