History
This aptly named brandy-based cocktail is improved by dilution, hence the addition of a splash of water. Modern convention might suggest stirring, but shaking this cocktail yields a superior result.
This drink is adapted from a recipe by Charles Schumann, who is based in Munich, Germany. It appeared in his book, American Bar. It bears a strong resemblance to Jerry Thomas' Fancy Brandy Cocktail, which was published in the 1862 edition of his influential work, The Bar-tenders Guide. Thomas' recipe for the Brandy Cocktail, found on page 107 and intended for a small bar glass, calls for: 3 or 4 dashes of gum syrup. 2 do. Bitters (Bogart's). 1 wine-glass of brandy. 1 or 2 dashes of Curaçao. Squeeze lemon peel; fill one-third full of ice, and stir with a spoon. Recipe number 108, for the Fancy Brandy Cocktail, also for a small bar glass, is made identically to the Brandy Cocktail, with the addition that it is strained into a fancy wine-glass. A piece of lemon peel is then placed on top, and the rim of the glass is moistened with lemon.
