History

Assertive herbal notes from Fernet Branca are a brilliant addition to this Sweet Orange Martini.

Adapted from a 2022 recipe by J. E. Clapham of Clapham Cocktails, this drink revitalizes a classic from the 1941 book, Crosby Gaige's Cocktail Guide and Ladies' Companion. Clapham suggests, "The name appears to be a patriotic reference to a naval engagement in the War of 1812 between Britain and the U.S.." The recipe uses Mr. Clapham's proportions but with Dubonnet, adhering to the original. However, Jason argues that "it works far better with vermouth," specifically recommending Carpano Antica and Fernet Menta.
