The Kentucky Derby has a long-standing association with the Mint Julep. In 1959, officials for the Florida Derby sought a signature drink for their own event. Mariano Licudine, of The Mai-Kai Polynesian Restaurant and Tiki bar in Oakland Park, Florida, created the Derby in 1959. It became the official cocktail of the Florida Derby, held at Gulfstream Park in Hallandale Beach.
