History
This is adapted from a recipe found in Lucius Beebe's 1946 Stork Club Bar Book. Cuff and Buttons: juice of half lime 4 dashes of sweet vermouth 2 oz. Southern Comfort Shake in a cocktail shaker, strain and serve chilled in 3 oz. glass. According to legend, Cuff & Buttons was the original name for Southern Comfort liqueur. It was created in the heart of New Orleans' French Quarter by a bartender named Martin Wilkes Heron. Whiskey arrived in New Orleans from Tennessee via the Mississippi River and was served straight from barrels. In 1874, Heron began developing his liqueur using this whiskey as a base. Locally grown lemon, lime, orange, and cherry were available, and as New Orleans was a thriving port, Heron also had access to spices such as Moroccan cinnamon and Mexican vanilla. When Heron launched his liqueur in 1889, another popular liqueur, Hats & Tails, was already on the market, prompting him to name his creation Cuffs & Buttons.
