3/4 oz Aged Jamaican rum
3/4 oz Tawny port
2 dash Aromatic bitters
1 dash Orange bitters

History

White port, tawny port, and ruby port have been tried in this vintage cocktail. Tawny works best, with white port a close second, especially sweeter styles. Choice of rum is also crucial, with bourbon arguably the least critical. Choosing brands well leads to delight.

From Crosby Gaige's 1944 Standard Cocktail Guide, the "COUNTRY LIFE" is made with: ½ jigger Jamaica Rum ½ jigger Port Wine 1 jigger Bourbon Whiskey 3 dashes Angostura Bitters Dash of Orange Bitters To be shaken with ice and strained into a cocktail glass.
