History
The original Cosmopolitan was made with citrus vodka, but it is also excellent with unflavoured vodka or a mix of both. The recipe allows for a total of 37.5ml (1¼oz) or slightly more of vodka to achieve a balanced and flavorful cocktail. Orange bitters were previously added, but the combination of triple sec liqueur and the orange peel's oils provides sufficient orange notes. As with many cocktails, two or three drops of saline solution can help harmonize the ingredients.
While the Cosmo's beginnings apparently lie in the gay bars of San Francisco during the 1970s, this modern classic drink saw its refinement and surge in popularity within New York City throughout the 1990s. Numerous bartenders contributed to its triumph over time, though the television series Sex and the City was arguably its greatest advocate.
