Ingredients

12 fresh Mint leaves
2 1/2 oz Cognac (brandy)
2/3 oz Sugar syrup 'rich' (2:1)

Prepare

  1. 1 Select and pre-chill a JULEP TIN.
  2. 2 Prepare garnish of mint sprigs.

Method

  1. 3 SHAKE all ingredients with ice.
  2. 4 FINE STRAIN into julep cup half-filled with crushed ice.
  3. 5 CHURN (stir) using a bar spoon.
  4. 6 TOP with more crushed ice and CHURN again
  5. 7 Repeat this process until the cocktail fills the cup.

Garnish

  1. 8 Garnish with mint sprigs bouquet.

History

A delicious and refreshing cocktail. The brandy's woody rancio notes are brightened by mint. Palates preferring less sweetness may wish to reduce the sugar.

While bourbon is the spirit most frequently found in a Julep today, it is likely that the drink originally called for cognac.
