History
A small, elegant Negroni variation, served straight-up, benefiting from slight dilution from stirring with good ice.
This drink is adapted from a recipe found in the 1929 publication Cocktails de Paris. The signature beneath the recipe attributes its creation to Lucien Gaudin. Lucien Gaudin, a French fencer who won an Olympic gold medal, was a frequent patron of Le Chevel Pie, a bar in Paris. A bartender there named Charlie created a cocktail that won a competition and was named Lucien Gaudin in honor of his regular customer. This is also noted in Cocktails de Paris. It is suggested that Lucien Gaudin named this particular cocktail as a playful tribute to Charlie, the bartender at Le Chevel Pie. Charlie Pie 1/2 Gordon Gin 3/8 Vermouth italien 1/8 Campari
