History

A Sweet Manhattan made with equal parts brandy.

Found in Harry Craddock's 1930 The Savoy Cocktail Book, the Charles Cocktail (No. 1) is described as 'the only known authentic Jacobite Cocktail,' named in reference to Bonnie Prince Charlie (Charles Edward Stuart), the figurehead of the 1745 Jacobite uprising. The preparation involves stirring ½ Italian Vermouth, ½ Brandy, and 1 Dash Angostura Bitters well before straining into a cocktail glass.
