History
Lemon oils add mouthfeel and flavour, combining with gin and vermouth botanicals to seem almost floral.
From the Big Brass Rail bar of the original Waldorf Astoria Hotel in New York City USA, this pre-Prohibition cocktail is named for a regular patron, "Sheriff Bob" Chanler. The recipe is adapted from Albert Stevens Crockett's 1931 book, Old Waldorf Astoria Bar Days. CHANLER This drink was named after "Sheriff Bob" Chanler, an artist whose sensational 1900s marriage to Mme. Lina Cavalieri of the Metropolitan Opera made headlines. According to Solon, many members of the well-known Chanler family frequented the bar, and "Bob" was on a first-name basis with all the Waldorf bartenders.
