History

A Last Word made with rhum agricole.

This drink was created in August 2024, following a recipe suggestion by Chris Brislawn from our Wordsmith page. It is named after Aimé Césaire (1913-2008), Martinique's most celebrated writer. Césaire, a poet, playwright, and politician, was a co-founder of the Négritude movement, which aimed to reclaim black identity and culture from colonialism. His literary works, including the 1939 poem Cahier d'un retour au pays natal (Notebook of a Return to the Native Land), significantly influenced Francophone literature and post-colonial discourse. His impact extended beyond Martinique, establishing him as a key figure in Caribbean literature and politics.
