History
This Espresso Martini-style cocktail, made with two equal parts, has achieved popularity.
The Puesto Carajillo, a layered iteration of this cocktail, is believed to have originated with Spanish soldiers stationed in Cuba during the time it was a Spanish territory. The soldiers combined rum with coffee to bolster their bravery; 'Coraje' is the Spanish word for courage, and its diminutive form is 'corajillo'. The Carajillo continues to be well-liked in Spain, with its preparation differing from one region to another. Some simply add brandy to an espresso, while others heat brandy with cinnamon, sugar, and lemon juice or zest before incorporating coffee. (In the Catalan language, the Carajillo is referred to as Cigaló.) This version of the Carajillo, prepared by shaking, or "Shakeado", appeared in Mexico and has seen a significant surge in popularity since approximately 2015.
